What is Hash?

Hash or Hashish, is derived from the Arabic language word for grass. It is originally found in Northern provinces between Koh Hindu Kush and the Russian border, as a compact mass of marijuana plant’s resin glands. Now a days, hash, or hashish is available in several different forms.

Over the years, hash is being become popular, as a term used to describe Cannabis or its several different forms. It is a misconception that people refer hash as a bud, kief, or a wax, or any alternative form. In the present time, Hash is generally defined as a cannabis such as “grass”, “herb”, “mary gane”, or a “nug”. The word ‘hash’ also has several other different meanings.

The History of Hash?

In the early period of the 12 th century, hashish smoking gained popularity in the countries of the Middle East. In the latter half of the 17 th century, Hashish became a major trade item between Central Asia and the South Asia. In the 18 th century, strict trade rules on hashish and other herbs limited the amount of its trade, especially between the countries of Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, and other Central Asian and Western Asian countries.

In the middle era of the 20th century, hashish usage again gains the popularity, especially in Greece and India. In the later period, hashish was exported in masses from Afghanistan to the Western Europe and California. In the year 1973, the Afghanistan government placed a penalty on the export of hashish and other herbs. Meanwhile, the quality of hash or hashish declined in the countries of Lebanon and Morocco, and their governments also ban the plantation and usage of hashish in their countries.

Modern Definition of Hash

In the current era, the Middle East is still the largest producer of the hash in the World. Independent production of the herb is also possible. There are different ways to extract the main ingredient, i.e. THC from the cannabis, hash. Hashish is produced from Trichomes, a muster of resin glands obtained from the cannabis plant. Trichomes are removed from the plant and dried. Then condensed to turn them into packed balls or blocks.

While the plants are trimmed by the growers, trichomes fall off the leaves in the shape of powder, and then collected on a silk screen. Another method of extraction is the usage of a grinder, having a screen for collection. Kief is obtained that would be burned and compressed into the form of hash or hashish. Without any processing or dry shifting, Kief can’t be defined officially as hash.

Hash Physical Forms

Hash is given several different names based on the methods of its formation. For instance, bubble hash is defined from the hash made from silk screen bags and ice water to separate or collect the trichomes from the plant. Then they are washed with water that forms bubbles and later filtered through the screen. It is regarded as bubble hash, the purest and safest form of hash.

Similarly, scissor or finger hash is defined by another method of collection. It is a harmless method; grower rubs the leaves on his hand or on a scissor, to collect trichome resin in the form of a stick, dark, and wet resin. Butane hash oil extraction is another practice of collecting trichomes. Collected from the leaves, shatter and wax are oils that concentrate THC and TBD. These condensed-oils are the forms of hash, as they are also obtained as the desired elements of the cannabis plants.

Today, there are many other forms of hash, processed through several different ways or methods. No matter the process, desired elements of the hash will always be the same. Both oils and hash are different shapes or definition of the active marijuana ingredient, but there is wide difference as how they are collected. May be a nickname of cannabis, but we should know the fact that hash has a strong history coming from several centuries back.
